چکیده

For lung cancer, the Peto et al. method involves approximating national non-smoker death rates by the death rates of a reference population of non-smokers. Lung cancer attributable mortality in a given country is thus calculated as the di erence between total national death rates and the respective death rates in the reference population. For other smoking-related diseases, we calculate the proportion of smoking-attributable deaths (PSAD) as follows:

Mortality and smoking prevalence: An empirical investigation in ten developed countries

We investigate the link between death rates and smoking prevalence in ten developed countries with the aim of using smoking prevalence data to explain differences in country-specific death rates. A particular problem in building a stochastic mortality model based on smoking prevalence is that there are in general no separate mortality data for smokers and non-smokers available. We show how we c...

Salivary thiocyanate levels among tobacco users, non-users, and passive smokers: A biochemical study

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of tobacco use and its associated mortality is increasing worldwide. Biomarkers in saliva, such as thiocyanate levels, have been shown to be a suitable indicator for smoking. The present study is conducted to determine the thiocyanate levels in saliva and compare them among tobacco (smoking and smokeless) users, passive smoker...

Evaluation of the Economic Impact of California's Tobacco Control Program: A Dynamic Model Approach--Appendix 2: A dynamic, normally distributed survival analysis of the relationship between aging, smoking history, and the mortality of men

In this appendix, I derive a survival model that makes use of the expressions for the index of tobacco-exposure resulting from an individual's smoking historyderived in Appendix 1. Based on this survival model, expressions for the probability of living and dying are derived for never-smokers, current smokers, and formersmokers. The likelihood function for a sample of individuals based on these ...

Tobacco smoking and all-cause mortality in a large Australian cohort study: findings from a mature epidemic with current low smoking prevalence

BACKGROUND The smoking epidemic in Australia is characterised by historic levels of prolonged smoking, heavy smoking, very high levels of long-term cessation, and low current smoking prevalence, with 13% of adults reporting that they smoked daily in 2013. Large-scale quantitative evidence on the relationship of tobacco smoking to mortality in Australia is not available despite the potential to ...
